I stayed at Bodhi Surf + Yoga for two weeks for their first Body Awaken retreat. I’ve never before heard of bodysurfing. But from now on it will always stay with me. Hannah & Spencer taught me how to bodysurf with their own enthusiasm and fun. They caught me with their bodysurfing fever. It was so super with them! And an incredible experience. I learned so much about the waves, the ocean and how to feel much more comfortable in it.

THE BODHI AWAKEN: 14 DAY BODYSURFING, OCEAN AWARENESS, SURF AND YOGA RETREAT EXPERIENCE
- If you do want to learn how to surf, there’s no better way to start than with bodysurfing! When it comes to learning how to surf, the more ocean experience the better, and if you want to reduce your learning curve, then you should spend some time catching waves without a surfboard first. As ISA certified surf instructors, we understand the necessity for our students to have a solid foundation of ocean knowledge and awareness before surfing with a board. Learn more about this unique sport!
- This is a unique, one-of-a-kind retreat. We are the first surf camp in the world to offer this kind of retreat, and are excited to link these core activities, and to really teach them. One of our goals here at Bodhi Surf + Yoga is also to inspire: in this instance, we want our students to progress their bodysurfing, have a wider ocean experience, shorten the learning curve of surfing, and gain mind-body awareness with the yoga.
- Community connection is built into the Bodhi Surf + Yoga experience. There is a community walking tour included on the first full day in Bahia Ballena, which highlights information about the community’s history, culture, as well as the flora and fauna of Costa Rica and our community. Read more about the community walking tour.
- Guests enjoy spending two weeks at Bodhi Surf + Yoga, because most feel that one week is simply not enough! Many return guests opt to book the two week retreat after visiting, as once they realize that two weeks is far better for learning, disconnecting, and getting in tune with nature. There’s much that could be said about this, but we will let the guests speak for themselves in this “What is Bodhi” video.
the surfing (and surf instruction) were why i personally came to bodhi and it did not disappoint. walking onto that beautiful, empty beach the first time was incredible, it felt like a secret, special place. the instruction was the best i ever had! spencer's attention to detail and emphasis on the fundamentals really paid off. starting with body surfing is really pretty brilliant, i've taken a few surf lessons before and everyone usually starts with the pop up, which is fine i guess, but what usually happens to me is that i can never figure out what waves to catch or when to commit to them. by body surfing first, i was able to literally feel it, and by the time i was standing up, i had a much better understanding of how.

The surf and yoga experience ended up being just what I needed in my life at the time. The yoga was so grounding and I felt so good in my body after Pillar's classes. I've noticed myself focusing more on my breath after my time at Bodhi, both on and off my mat. The surf lessons allowed me to learn something new that was a little scary at first but so fun. I felt totally supported and safe as I worked through my fears.

If you’re interested in squeezing the juice out of your vacation, note that there is ample time to do activities outside of the surf and yoga program. As mentioned above, there is plenty to choose from!
I first came to Bodhi last year for their classic one-week surf and yoga programme and really enjoyed it. It was then that I learnt about the existence of ‘bodysurfing’, which I found fascinating and really intrigued me. So, a month after my return home I decided to come back to Bodhi and join Hannah and Spencer on their first official ‘Bodhi Awaken’ sessions and booked this two-weeks programme including bodysurfing, board surfing and yoga. Everything that the Bodhi troop does is gold-standard (believe all the good stuff everyone says!). In this case, the ‘bodysurfing’ element was definitely the highlight. I feel a lot more equipped to go out in the ocean and safely play with the waves. Also, I cannot even begin to describe the experience of catching a wave’s energy and being propelled like a rocket to shore - there are literally no words for such fun and adrenaline!
Bodhi Awaken: 14 Day Bodysurfing, Ocean Awareness, Surf and Yoga Retreat daily schedule
Note that this is a sample schedule, as exact times of activities are subject to change — as a surf / bodysurf school, we must operate around the tides!
Saturday (Day 1)
Since our shared trip down to Uvita starts at 9:00 AM on Sunday, you have the flexibility to land in Costa Rica at whatever time works best for you on Saturday. By using the arrival details from your participant form, we take care of all the airport pickup logistics—so you can step off the plane feeling completely at ease.
When you exit the terminal, a driver will be waiting with a sign bearing your name, ready to take you straight to your first night's accommodation. We typically book our guests at our longtime favorite, the Adventure Inn.
If they happen to be fully booked, we will arrange a nearby hotel with the exact same level of comfort and welcoming vibe. Once you settle into your room, take a deep breath, grab a tasty bite to eat, and get a great night's sleep. You’ll want to be fully recharged before our pura vida adventure officially begins on Sunday morning!
Sunday (Day 2)
On Sunday morning, our driver Wali picks you up with the rest of the group at 9 am and you start your journey down here to Bahia Ballena. The drive is about 4 and a half hours, with a bathroom/smoothie break included.
You arrive here at Bodhi Surf + Yoga at around 1:30 pm, where you’re greeted by our head of Guest Support for a quick introductory talk before showing you into your rooms and giving you the “Bodhi Tour” – a walk-about of the property pointing out some points of interest, wildlife, and telling a bit about the history of Bodhi Surf + Yoga.
After this, you'll have a traditional Costa Rican welcome lunch wrapped in banana leaves before heading off for the community tour at 3:30 pm. This is one of our favorite and most important parts of the entire schedule!
During lunch and the walking tour you're able to get to know each other better and ask any questions about the schedule, classes, meals, activities, etc.
It’s a great way of getting your bearings, learning about our community, and spotting some wildlife ahead of your week (or two weeks) with us here.
Sunday ends casually with you starting to feel more like a neighbor than a passing visitor.

Monday (Day 3)
Monday is an exciting day because it will be your first official opportunity to use your knowledge and skills in Mother Ocean! You will start the morning off right with some coffee and a banana (or two) before piling into the surf mobile to head down to Playa Chaman for your second bodysurf lesson.
Before entering the ocean for the bodysurf session, your instructors will provide you with some history and information about the park, including a brief discussion about where you are going to be spending the next few weeks!
After spending two hours frolicking in the warm, tropical waters, you will head back to Bodhi Surf + Yoga to satisfy your newfound appetite with a delicious home-cooked breakfast.
Later, after digesting, get ready for a "limbering up" yoga class in our tree house style yoga platform. Enjoy the sites and sounds as you stretch and learn how to take the practice off the mat and into your day.
Afterwards, you'll be heading to the local Uvita waterfall. You can grab a cool beverage and some lunch at the restaurant located near the entrance of the waterfall before being transported back to Bodhi in the late afternoon. By evening, you'll feel like your part of this town and our Bodhi family.
Tuesday (Day 4)
You will likely find yourself rising early with the sun, as your body gets in tune with its natural circadian rhythm.
After grabbing a light snack and some coffee, you will return to the beach for your ocean bodysurf lesson, where you will continue perfecting your wave-swimming abilities.
Post bodysurfing, another filling breakfast at Bodhi Surf + Yoga is in order. Then you are free to do your own thing until lunch is served around 1 pm. Chill for the rest of the day until your afternoon yoga session that will help your body recover for tomorrow; a new day, and a new adventure.

Wednesday (Day 5)
Wednesday is similar to Monday and Tuesday except for more free time since there isn't any lunch included. This is your opportunity to take advantage of the myriad adventurous activities and sights to see in and around town. For example, eating meals out at the local favorite spots, going for a walk to the Whale Tail or a hike into the local mountains, or just chilling at the Bodhi Surf + Yoga lodge, lounging in the hammocks, in the pool, or on the day beds.
You might even be able to do one of the many half or full-day tours of the area: boat tours (whale watching, snorkeling, or to a famous nearby national park), canyoning, zip lining, horseback riding, and more.
Thursday (Day 6)
After resting up during your day off, and entering your sixth day in Costa Rica, you will be fresh and ready to dive back into Mother Ocean, for your next bodysurf session.
After being in the ocean that morning, you will return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by a yoga session later in the morning. In the wake of an action-packed morning, you will have plenty of time to decompress before our second to last group lunch hosted at Bodhi. Maybe you'll even want to head down to the beach for sunset before checking in for the nights sleep.
You’ll need to rest up after which because your next bodysurf lesson is the following morning!

Friday (Day 7)
Today is the day! On Friday morning, it’s not unlikely to have a “dawn patrol” bodysurf class where the aim is that everything comes together and you are able to catch green waves.
Following that session, a light and delicious breakfast along with a hefty cup of coffee is in order.
After yoga, pool time, and lunch, guests and staff share in on the weekly “closing” activity — a thoughtful and reflection-filled Bodhi Gratitude Circle. It’s a synergetic way to end the first week.
Saturday (Day 8)
Saturday is a free day, so be sure to distribute your rest time and activities accordingly; the next week of guests will be arriving on Sunday.
Sunday-Friday (Days 9-14)
Interested in what the second week of Bodhi Awaken will look like? It will take the shape and form of our 7 Day Surf + Yoga Camp. You will transition from body surfing to board surfing. Read on!
The Bodhi camp has been one of my favorite surf and yoga camps to attend. I first visited for two weeks in February and then again for three weeks in July 2021. The surf team members are attuned to participants’ different surfing levels and are able to adjust their coaching style to support overall progress. As an intermediate surfer, my favorite part was it felt like I was just out surfing with friends but could immediately tell that my skills kept improving week after week.

We hope you will come see us!
